DIPLOMA IN DANCE TEACHING & LEARNING
Teacher training at Swindon Dance
The Diploma in Dance Teaching & Learning (DDTAL) for Children & Young People (CYP) is a Dance Training & Accreditation Partnership (DTAP) initiative led by Youth Dance England (YDE) and developed in collaboration with Trinity College London (TCL).
Swindon Dance is one of the first DDTAL registered centres in England. We have been delivering the new teaching qualification since Autumn 2010.
We are one of four pilot centres, along with Dance 4, Trinity Laban and Yorkshire Dance. We are also a training provider, offering mentoring and training for candidates working towards the diploma.
ABOUT THE DDTAL
The Diploma in Dance Teaching & Learning is the first teaching qualification in the country designed for dance practitioners working with children and young people outside statutory education and the private sector.
It is a vocational qualification and is placed at Level 6 on the Qualifications & Credit Framework (QCF) — a similar level to third year of a BA Honours degree.
The course is modular and flexible, and is accredited by Trinity College London.
WHO IS IT FOR?
The diploma is designed for dance practitioners wishing to gain an accredited teaching qualification. Practitioners may be working in a wide range of dance genres. Examples include contemporary, ballet, hip hop and Bharata Natyam.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
The DDTAL benefits dance practitioners working with children and young people as it provides evidence of teaching expertise with these age groups for potential employers, colleagues and parents and carers.
The course also offers dance professionals an opportunity to reflect on their practice and helps broaden career paths.
Sarah Bishop, member of Biserk Dance Company and current Swindon Dance DDTAL candidate, puts it this way:
"I highly recommend the course to other dance practitioners. I am only one third of the way through but already I have a real sense of its value and its content in relationship to my work ...."
"I'm really looking forward to finally having accreditation for the hard work I have put in, and the learning experience I have accumulated as a teacher over the years."

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
The course entry requirements are :
no formal previous qualification is required
dance training to degree level or relevant level of teaching experience is required
a CRB (Criminal Record Bureau) check is made
candidates must be 18 years or over
COURSE MODULAR STRUCTURE
There are four modules, or units, to the course and they are required to be taken in order. Each module is assessed individually by Trinity College London.
All four modules must be completed within three years in order to gain the diploma, although it is likely that candidates will complete them within two years.
ROUTES TO QUALIFICATION
At Swindon Dance we offer two routes to qualification. At the core of qualification, through either route, is the development of the practitioner as a 'reflective' dance leader, and both pathways to assessment start with an individual Training Needs Analysis (TNA).
The two pathways we offer are:

The mentoring pathway
This pathway is designed for highly experienced practitioners who feel confident enough to be assessed following mentoring sessions based on their TNA. However, ALL students are strongly advised to take Unit 1 as taught and mentored (see below) in order to gain maximum benefit from the course. This advice is particularly relevant to candidates without other higher education experience.

The training and mentoring pathway
This pathway is designed for less experienced practitioners who require a greater underpinning of knowledge in order to be assessed following training sessions and mentoring based on their TNA.
All assessment is conducted by Trinity College London Assessors,
who use a range of methods.
